Qualitative Data Analysis
There are key features in analyzing qualitative data, regardless of the analytic approach that you choose. At this phase, you are exploring how your research questions and aims are connected to your data. It is an iterative cycle that requires multiple readings or reviews of your data, codes, and categories or themes. Specific analytic steps and approaches can differ depending on your methodological design.
Qualitative Longitudinal Analysis
What is it? Qualitative longitudinal analysis is used when data is collected at different time frames and needs to be explored to understand change and/or actions over an extended period of time. This type of analysis can explore differences in time periods, seasons, or how actions or beliefs may change in a group over time.
There are two main approaches to qualitative longitudinal data analysis: recurrent cross-sectional and trajectory. The recurrent cross-sectional analysis looks at thematic changes that occur over time for a large group of participants. In this method, the same type of data is collected at different time points. The recurrent cross-sectional analysis requires two sets of analyses. The first is understanding and coding the data at a specific time. Next, each time point is examined for similarities and differences.
Trajectory analysis explores changes over time for a small group or one case. In this analysis, it is expected that there will be many different types of data collected for an extended period. The variety of data is similar to a qualitative case study with the difference being the collection of the same types of data at different time points, also called individual trajectories. For trajectory longitudinal analysis the first time point is coded and used as the base for comparing other time points.
Longitudinal analysis is primarily used in healthcare settings to explore an intervention. Due to complexity of longitudinal qualitative analyses, decisions should be made early in a project. If possible, it is beneficial to have an analysis team or constant communication with peer examiners to ensure consistency and trustworthiness.
