Qualitative Data Analysis

There are key features in analyzing qualitative data, regardless of the analytic approach that you choose. At this phase, you are exploring how your research questions and aims are connected to your data. It is an iterative cycle that requires multiple readings or reviews of your data, codes, and categories or themes. Specific analytic steps and approaches can differ depending on your methodological design.

Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS)

man-using-ai-machine-learning-data-analysis-118 What is it? Qualitative data analysis software is the use of computer software programs to store, analyze and/or present qualitative data. QDAS does not directly analyze the data for the researcher, but it aids in organizing and sorting data and can assist in visual displays of the results.

Examples of QDAS programs include, but are not limited to:

  • ATLAS.ti
  • Dedoose
  • MAXQDA
  • NVivo
  • QDA Miner

These programs and others may replace colored pens, paper, rulers, and highlighters that have been traditionally used in qualitative research for manual coding and analysis. 

The use of QDAS has grown in recent years because of:

  • Ease of retrieval of large amounts of qualitative data
  • Ease of coding large amounts of qualitative data
  • Ability to edit and store field notes
  • Options for a variety of data visualizations
  • Smooth navigation between analytic memos and the analysis process
