Qualitative Data Analysis

There are key features in analyzing qualitative data, regardless of the analytic approach that you choose. At this phase, you are exploring how your research questions and aims are connected to your data. It is an iterative cycle that requires multiple readings or reviews of your data, codes, and categories or themes. Specific analytic steps and approaches can differ depending on your methodological design.

Grounded Theory Data Analysis

pexels-group-conference-data-analysis-116 What is it? Grounded theory is an iterative process of moving between data collection and analysis. Unlike other qualitative data analyses, it is expected that data is analyzed before all data is collected and a theory is developed. There is usually one research question used to guide the iterations and to inform if more data is needed. New research questions can emerge during analysis and data collection.

Grounded theory usually consists of two types of coding called open and axial coding. In open coding, the data is divided into groups that are related to the research question. The groups are then further divided into preliminary categories connected to the research question. The open coding process consists of several iterations of data collection until no new information emerges from the data. Afterwards, axial coding is applied. This type of coding explores the existing categories to develop themes to understand a phenomenon and/or develop a theory. In some instances, selective coding is used to clearly explain how a theory is derived from the data.

Due to the iterative process of grounded theory analysis, memo writing is expected at each iteration to aid in documenting thoughts, analysis rationale, and potential themes/theory. It is very important to keep track of all decisions made in this type of analysis.

Our consultants can support you throughout the research process to ensure adherence to the principles of grounded theory, including proper coding and analysis techniques, and theory generation.

FAQ About Grounded Theory Data Analysis

There are different forms of ethnographic research designs. Some forms are discipline-specific, e.g. feminist ethnographies, realist ethnography. Some ethnographic projects are informed by the types of settings for the immersion and collection of data, e.g. medical ethnography, business ethnography.

The grounded theory is an iterative process. Thus, the length of the study will depend on the number of participants, time spent on the analysis at each iteration, and recruitment process. It is not likely to complete a grounded theory in less than 3 months.

The number of participants for grounded theory varies. It is suggested to have no less than 20 participants. However, data saturation is more important than the number of participants.

Data saturation is an important element in grounded theory. It is the process of collecting data until no new information is found. Therefore, the amount will vary depending on your research question(s) and data saturation.

Yes, many qualitative research project use a different type of analysis from the research design. The research questions should inform the type of qualitative analysis.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I was referred to Elite Research from a friend, who is a Doctoral student from another university. He received excellent assistance with compilation of his statistics and assistance with formatting the stats. I signed up for the same services and also APA formatting and proofing. Elite gave me a written estimate up front for various services, so I could chose what fit my needs and budget. The turnaround time was incredibly fast! My classmates were extremely impressed by the professional quality of my paper and have signed up also.
